Choose Kindness

There's an old Native American folktale about an old man and his grandson. The old man is telling him how we all have two wolves fighting inside us. One wolf is filled with hate, negativity, greed, cruelty, it is the bad wolf. The other wolf is filled with love, compassion, generosity, and kindness, it is the good wolf. The grandson asks the old man, “if the two wolves are fighting, then which wolf wins?”. And the old man responds, “The wolf that wins is the one we feed.”

This applies to how we determine the happiness in our own lives. If we feed our life with negativity, then that is exactly how our life will turn out. But if we feed our life with kindness and positivity, then we can live a happier life. I believe kindness has the power to create happiness in ourselves, and the world around us.

What is Kindness?

Kindness is being friendly, generous, and considerate of others. Kindness can be given and received as a simple gesture, a compliment, or an act, no matter how big or how small. The kindness we give and receive can determine the happiness created in our lives. So how does kindness make us happier? There is actually some science behind it! When we share kindness, give kindness, or witness kindness, it makes us feel good, it makes us feel happy. The reason we feel happy is because kindness stimulates the production of those “feel good hormones” in our bodies; Dopamine, Serotonin, Oxytocin, and Endorphins. Dopamine is the good feeling you get when you approach a reward, Serotonin is the good feeling you get when getting respect, Oxytocin is the feeling of trust, and Endorphin is the euphoria that masks physical pain. So when we share kindness, give kindness, or witness kindness, it has been proven to make us happier and reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.

Be Kind to Yourself

It is so important that when you choose to be kind, you choose to be kind to yourself. What I mean by being kind to yourself, I mean start believing in yourself. Stop the self doubt, the negativity, the hate, and the I can't's. Because whatever you speak about yourself can determine your destiny. When we speak negatively about ourselves, we are just attracting and accepting the negativity into our lives. But it doesn't have to be that way. When we are kind to ourselves and speak positively about ourselves, we are attracting and accepting the positivity into our lives.

It is the law of attraction.

Be kind to yourself by shifting your direction from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset, and also give yourself some love. Indulge in self care and self love just as you give to others.

Be Kind to Others

Kindness is also powerful when we share it with others.

Not only does it make us feel good, but it makes others feel good as well.

So, how do we develop kindness? By practicing it. Kindness doesn't have to be only shared with people you know, it can be shared with anything or anyone. Kindness can be shared with family, friends, enemies, strangers, animals, and our Earth.

Kindness is free and powerful, yet we struggle to see it everywhere we go. That is because Kindness can sometimes be hard. Sometimes we may find ourselves in difficult situations, and our response to react with kindness is easier said than done. We can forget to be kind when we are simply busy or stressed with life that we don't take the time to notice and help others. It can be hard to be kind when you have just been put down, or insulted. But we must work hard to remain kind to create a life of happiness.

How I Share Kindness

I practice kindness in the work place helping students grow, and everywhere I go, with my family, friends, and strangers. I spread kindness on my social media platform by sharing kind quotes and messages every week . I do so because it shines positivity and good vibes across my platform. But I also do so in hopes those words reach the right person who is struggling, and needed to see them. I do it to inspire others to be kind.

Kindness is one of the most important skills we can develop in life. It will provide us and those around us with a greater quality of life by making us happy.

Choose Kindness and Spread Kindness

I support anything kind and that makes a difference. Bird + Stone is a female-founded company that ethically makes jewelry in the USA and donates 10% of all sales to non profit organizations that fight for equality. I've joined them in their campaign to "Choose Kindness and Spread Kindness" which they've dedicated to raise $10,000 for The Campaign Against Hunger. Each Choose Kindness bracelet will distribute $15 of healthy food to people in need. Check out their page at: https://birdandstone.com/ and check out their products to help support a cause in women's health, girls' education, women in politics, climate, poverty, civil liberties, feminism, end child marriage, and refugees & immigrants.

I’ll end my post with this quote by Roy T Bennet:

Attitude is a choice,
Happiness is a choice,
Optimism is a choice,
Kindness is a Choice,
Giving is a choice,
Respect is a choice.
Whatever choice you make, makes you.
Choose Wisely.
